ABOUT SLIGHTLY STOOPID

Formed in the Ocean Beach neighborhood of San Diego, California in 1994, Slightly Stoopid performs music that can be described as "a fusion of folk, rock, reggae, and blues with hip-hop, funk, metal, and punk."

CAREER

1994-2007: Formation and early releases

Childhood friends Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald and high school friend Adam Bausch began writing and playing together in the early-1990s. The band was discovered by Sublime frontman Bradley Nowell when he was staying with Doughty’s nurse mother and her doctor boyfriend in their drug rehabilitation program. He heard the band practicing in their garage and was so impressed that he invited them to perform in Long Beach, California at the Foot Hill Tavern. Not long after, he signed them to his label, Skunk Records. At the time, the band was all still in high school.

They released their debut album, Slightly $toopid, in 1996. It features the hidden song "Prophet", which has Nowell playing bass – this was later covered by Sublime and released on their box set, Everything Under the Sun. Their debut has clear punk influences, whereas the band’s second album – 1998’s The Longest Barrel Ride – incorporates a surf-rock-inspired sound.

In 2001, they self-released the album  Acoustic Roots: Live & Direct (a 40-minute acoustic set, captured live at San Diego's 91X radio station). It was the first release of their own label, Stoopid Records. 2003’s Everything You Need was released by Surfdog Records, reaching number 20 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart.

2005’s Closer to the Sun, Slightly Stoopid’s fourth studio album, was the first without drummer Adam Bausch and with the addition of Ryan 'RyMo' Moran (drums), as well as Oguer 'OG' Ocon (congas, percussion, harp, vocals), C-Money (trumpet, keyboard) and Dela (saxophone) from John Brown's Body. The album features guest appearances from well-known reggae names Barrington Levy and Scientist and it topped the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart as well as charting on the Billboard 200.

The following year, they released their first-ever electric live album, Winter Tour '05-'06 Live CD/DVD, as well as their first-ever DVD, Live in San Diego. In 2007, the band released its fifth studio album, Chronicitis, which debuted at number 55 on the Billboard 200 and also charted on four other Billboard charts. It features artists such as G Love, Guru of Gang Starr, Angelo Moore of Fishbone, Toko Tasi, and Money Mark.

2008-2011: Stoopid Records and live albums

The band issued their first-ever 'odds and ends' collection, Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid, in 2008. It features outtakes from both the Closer to the Sun and Chronchitis sessions, as well as material recorded at Circle House Studios in Miami, Florida. The album was released on the band’s own label, Stoopid Records, which also features the label's first signed act, Santa Cruz reggae-rock act The Expendables.

In 2009, the band teamed up with Snoop Dogg for the co-headlining "Blazed & Confused Tour" across North America.

Slightly Stoopid was invited by the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir into his state-of-the-art TRI Studios for a live webcast and in-studio performance on September 30, 2011. They recorded Live at Roberto's TRI Studios, performing alongside Weir as well as Karl Denson, Don Carlos, Ivan Neville, Ian Neville, and host Tommy Chong.

2012-present: Top of the World and Meanwhile...Back at the Lab

The band released its seventh studio album, Top of the World, was on August 14, 2012. It features collaborations with  Barrington Levy and Don Carlos of Black Uhuru; Karl Denson of Greyboy Allstars; G. Love; Fishbone frontman Angelo Moore; ex-Jurassic Five emcee Chali 2na; Dumpstaphunk’s Ian Neville; and Angela Hunte. The album debuted at number 13 on the Billboard 200 and hit the top six on five other Billboard albums charts.

The band toured throughout 2013 and played 38 dates in 2014, alongside G. Love and also Bob Marley's son, Stephen Marley.

The band released its eighth studio album, Meanwhile...Back at the Lab, on June 29, 2015. This was followed by Everyday Life, Everyday People, released on July 13, 2018. Everyday Life, Everyday People is their first album to chart on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart, which it topped. The album features special guests, Italian reggae artist, Alborosie, UB40's Ali Campbell, Chali 2na, Don Carlos (on two tracks), G.Love, and Yellowman.
